There are a number of different family friendly beaches in the world, and most families look for beaches that have some or all of the following features:

• Soft, clean sands that are perfect for sand castles and make comfortable surfaces to stay the whole day on
• Clean, calm and shallow waters that are safe for paddling and bathing for children
• Lifeguard cover and nearby medical services
• Good facilities such as toilets, cafes, ice cream bars, sunlounger/parasol hire and parking

You should check the beach to see if there are any advice warnings for the water conditions (these will be indicated by a sign near the car park or main beach entrance and flags), and if it is a remote beach with no signs or notifications it is best to avoid swimming unless you know the area well.

Remember that many of the best family beaches along the Mediterranean coastline are private, and you will have to pay a small fee to use them.
